App Focus – Liferay Portal
Liferay Portal is a leading web application platform for internal and external corporate web sites. The software is free and open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License. The term “portal” is key to this software. The portal scheme uses functional units called portlets to construct the web site. Each portlet is used to provide a web application service such as email, news, discuss forums, reports, forms, etc. Portlets can be organized and administered easily, allowing for the construction of sophisticated web sites without a great deal of complexity.
The popularity of Liferay Portal is very high, averaging over 100,000 downloads per month presently and over 4 million downloads lifetime. The project for development and maintenance of Liferay Portal is very active and includes an extensive and diverse community of over 45,000 members that contribute to the growth and success of the platform.
Liferay Portal is written in Java and is compliant with Java Portlet Specifications. A powerful and complete programming API is available for developers. However, due to the modular design of the software and easy administration via a web interface, no programming skills are required for basic website installation and administration.
eApps has been supporting Liferay Portal since December of 2008. We offer a CentOS Linux OS template with version 6.1 of Liferay Portal pre-installed in our Virtual Machine in the Cloud service. Our user guide will explain how to deploy the application and our support staff provides excellent support. Customers have the choice of MySQL or PostgreSQL database server.
Take advantage of our July promotion in this newsletter for 60% off the first month of a Virtual Machine. Just go to http://create-a-cloud.com, choose your resources and the Liferay Portal template, apply the promotion code and you are off and running.

“God particle” reportedly found
On July 4, the Eurpoean Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) reported that the last, elusive particle has been found as a result of supercollider experiments. The so-called “God particle” is the key component in a model that describes particle physics. Now the universe is understood, or so they say!
Actually it is interesting stuff. To take a break from technology news and delve into the significance of particle physics, go here for a layman’s overview:

TECH TIP
eApps Doc Guide
Our Knowledgebase is full of documentation to help you use the hosting service effectively, but the sheer volume of docs can be confusing. This tech tip helps you understand how to find the documentation you need.
The first step is to determine how you log in to manage your account – to either the Customer Portal or the Control Panel.
If you login to your account at https://cp.eapps.com/cp, then you have a VPS (Virtual Private Server), and the documentation for your service is located at Virtual Private Server (VPS) User Guides.
For complete details on how to find your docs, click here.
